Daily Variation in the Body Temperatures of Free-Ranging Garter Snakes
نویسنده
چکیده
This study describes how the body temperatures (Th) of individual garter snakes varied on a daily basis under field conditions. Temperature-sensitive radio transmitters were surgically implanted into 10 Thamnophis elegans vagrans in eastern Wash? ington. The snakes were released and monitored at 15-min intervals for periods of up to several days from June 1979 to May 1980. Operative environmental temperatures were estimated with painted metal models and were used to indicate possible rb's. The com? bination of telemetered body temperatures with operative temperature data permitted detailed description of Th variation and evaluation of the relative importance of the physical environment and behavior in determining that variation. The physical environment usually prevented the snakes from attaining preferred (selected) 7ys and thus limited when and where they could be active and potentially reduced their physiological performance. On cool days or at night, when operative temperatures (Te) were < 15?C, the snakes remained underground and body temperatures changed gradually. On moderate days (15? < Te < 30?), the snakes usually emerged but were unable to maintain preferred body temperatures, and Tb variation was marked. On warm days (Te > 30?), the snakes selected Tb's within their preferred temperature range, and variation in Tb was small (e.g., range = 28.0?-32.5?, X = 29.9?, sd = 1.32?). The snakes stayed within their preferred temperature range >90% of the time when Te > 30?. Their high thermoregulatory precision and thermal utilization presumably maintained high levels of physiological performance on warm days. Delays in emergence accounted for most instances in which the snakes did not utilize available thermal opportunities. Behavioural variation in natural populations. VII. Maternal body temperature does not affect juvenile thermoregulation in a garter snake
This study was aimed to determine whether thermoregulation by juvenile garter snakes is affected by developmental temperature imposed by their mothers during pregnancy. Maternal temperature treatments were created by maintaining six groups of females at six different constant temperatures (2632°C) during pregnancy. A seventh group of females was allowed to thermoregulate during pregnancy. The b...

We investigated the mechanisms by which temperature induces seasonal reproductive behavior in red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). Specifically, we addressed whether elevated temperatures during winter dormancy influence (1) diel melatonin and corticosterone rhythms; (2) sex steroid hormone and corticosterone profiles; and (3) the expression of reproductive behavior followi...
متن کاملConflicts between courtship and thermoregulation: the thermal ecology of amorous male garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis, colubridae).
Thermoregulatory behavior is an important component of daily activities for many reptiles, especially for small heliothermic (sun-basking) species that inhabit cold climates. However, the relative costs and benefits of thermoregulation depend on numerous factors, such that reptiles may sometimes accord a low priority to precise control of body temperatures. We observed and radio tracked garter ...
متن کاملA model for optimal reaction norms: the case of the pregnant garter snake and her temperature-sensitive embryos.
We present a model to test Osgood's ( 1978 ) proposition that viviparous snakes have optimal reaction norms for temperature-sensitive meristic traits, such as scale counts. Our model predicts that traits that are subject to temperature effects during development will evolve a flat or [Formula: see text]-shaped reaction norm (average scale count as a function of developmental temperature). We te...
متن کاملScaling the heights: thermally driven arboreality in garter snakes
Occasional use of arboreal habitats is common in many otherwise-terrestrial species, but the functions of facultative arboreality remain unclear. Red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) are small nonvenomous terrestrial snakes, recorded to climb only rarely. During springtime fieldwork near a large communal overwintering den in Manitoba, we observed occasional episodes when hun...
